Hymn “Come, Thou Almighty King”  LSB # 905

1 Come, Thou almighty King, Help us Thy Name to sing: Help us to praise;
Father all-glorious, O’er all victorious,
Come and reign over us, Ancient of Days.

2 Come, Thou incarnate Word, Gird on Thy mighty sword; Our prayer attend.

Come and Thy people bless, And give Thy Word success,

And let Thy righteousness On us descend.

3 Come, holy Comforter, Thy sacred witness bear In this glad hour!

Thou, who almighty art, Now rule in ev'ry heart,

And ne’er from us depart, Spirit of pow'r.

4 To Thee, great One in Three, Eternal praises be Hence evermore!

Thy sov'reign majesty May we in glory see,

And to eternity Love and adore.

P:   In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C:   Amen.

P:   Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C:   who made heaven and earth.

P:   I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,

C:   and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

(We reflect on God’s Word and examine ourselves)

P:   O almighty God, merciful Father,

C:   I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You, and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P:   Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:   Amen.

The Introit is read…

(Sung)

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen.

The Antiphon is read…

(Sung)

Lord, have mercy upon us.  Christ have mercy upon us.  Lord, have mercy upon us.

(Glory be to God on high)

…and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.  We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee, we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee for Thy great glory.  O Lord God, heav’nly King, God the Father Almighty.  O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer.  Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.  For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord.  Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father.  Amen.

P:   The Lord be with you.

C:   And also with you.

P:   Let us pray.

Collect of the Day:

P:   Let us pray.  Merciful Lord, cleanse and defend Your Church by the sacrifice of Christ.  United with Him in Holy Baptism, give us grace to receive with thanksgiving the fruits of His redeeming work and daily follow in His way; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:   Amen.

Hymn  “Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word”  LSB # 655

1 Lord, keep us steadfast in Your Word; Curb those who by deceit or sword

Would wrest the kingdom from Your Son And bring to naught all He has done.

2 Lord Jesus Christ, Your pow'r make known, For You are Lord of lords alone;

Defend Your holy Church that we May sing your praise eternally.

3 O Comforter of priceless worth, Send peace and unity on earth;

Support us in our final strife And lead us out of death to life.

Scripture Readings

Old Testament (Jeremiah 23:16-29)

Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. 17 They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, ‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, ‘No disaster shall come upon you.’”

18 For who among them has stood in the council of the Lord

    to see and to hear his word,

    or who has paid attention to his word and listened?

19 Behold, the storm of the Lord!

    Wrath has gone forth,

a whirling tempest;

    it will burst upon the head of the wicked.

20 The anger of the Lord will not turn back

    until he has executed and accomplished

    the intents of his heart.

In the latter days you will understand it clearly.

21 “I did not send the prophets,

    yet they ran;

I did not speak to them,

    yet they prophesied.

22 But if they had stood in my council,

    then they would have proclaimed my words to my people,

and they would have turned them from their evil way,

    and from the evil of their deeds.

23 “Am I a God at hand, declares the Lord, and not a God far away? 24 Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord. 25 I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, ‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’ 26 How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart, 27 who think to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another, even as their fathers forgot my name for Baal? 28 Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? declares the Lord. 29 Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

P:   This is the Word of the Lord.

C:   Thanks be to God.

Epistle Reading    (Hebrews 11:17-31; 12:1-3)

y faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, 18 of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 19 He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. 20 By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau. 21 By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff. 22 By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones.

23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king's edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, 25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.

29 By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned. 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. 31 By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.

12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted

P:   This is the Word of the Lord.

C:   Thanks be to God.

P:  The holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 12th chapter.

C:  (sung) Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

(Luke 12:49-53)

          “I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! 50 I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! 51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. 52 For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

P:   This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C:   (sung) Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

Hymn of the Day  “God Has Spoken by His Prophets”  LSB #583

1 God has spoken by His prophets, Spoken His unchanging Word;
   Each from age to age proclaiming God the one, the righteous Lord.
   In the world's despair and turmoil One firm anchor holds us fast:
   God is king, His throne eternal; God the first, and God the last.

2 God has spoken by Christ Jesus, Christ, the everlasting Son,
   Brightness of the Father's glory, With the Father ever one;
   Spoken by the Word Incarnate, God of God, before time was;
   Light of Light, to earth descending, He reveals our God to us.

3 God is speaking by His Spirit, Speaking to our hearts again,
   In the ageless Word declaring His own message, now as then.
   Through the rise and fall of nations One sure faith yet standing fast;
   God abides, His Word unchanging; God the first, and God the last.

Sermon

Confession of Faith  --  Apostles’ Creed

C:   I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

      maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

      who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

      born of the Virgin Mary,

      suffered under Pontius Pilate,

      was crucified, died and was buried.
      He descended into hell.

      The third day He rose again from the dead.

      He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

      From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,

      the holy Christian Church,
      the communion of saints,

      the forgiveness of sins,

      the resurrection of the body,

      and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Offertory

Create in me a clean heart, O God,

And renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from Thy presence,

And take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.

Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation,

And uphold me with Thy free Spirit.  Amen.

Closing Hymn  “Almighty Father, Bless the Word”  LSB #923

1       Almighty Father, bless the Word Which through Your grace we now have heard.
         Oh, may the precious seed take root,   Spring up, and bear abundant fruit!

2       We praise You for the means of grace As homeward now our steps we trace.
         Grant, Lord, that we who worshiped here May all at last in heav'n appear.

3       Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below;
         Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
